Happy Pride Month, Ontario! This year, we all have a lot to celebrate, and a distance still to go to build the province we deserve.
In June and throughout the summer, communities all over Ontario will celebrate the gains made by and with members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. In Toronto, the Pride Parade that started as a small protest will be celebrating its 38th anniversary. Toronto Pride is a beacon and a leader in progress, bringing together about a million people to demand justice and equity.
It's inspiring to see how far Ontario has come, but we know that LGBTQIA2S+ people continue to face homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and persecution. As New Democrats, we stand in solidarity, and promise to keep bringing these issues to the forefront every chance we get. It's why we have fought for GSAs in our schools, and for Toby's law to protect the human rights of trans people. And its why my election platform includes access to affirmative and inclusive health care, full coverage for transition drugs and better access to primary and secondary procedures following internationally-accepted standards of care established by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). My plan also includes coverage for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications, and a commitment to ensure aging seniors have long-term care where they can live with Pride.
An NDP government will ensure identification documents are reflective of every individual’s gender identity, and we will combat violence against the trans community. We will be tireless in our push to ensure trans and gender variant people have equal rights and access to services in Ontario.
We will not stop this fight. We will continue to build a more progressive and inclusive province with you.
Happy Pride month, Ontario!
